Hina Wadood and Fatima Nawaz, 2009 Co-Winners of the Ron Lenyk Volunteer of the Year Award

At its annual Celebration Day on October 14, 2009, Peel Children’s Centre – the primary provider of children’s mental health services in Peel Region – will award the Centre’s Ron Lenyk Volunteer of the Year Award to Hina Wadood and Fatima Nawaz.

Hina and Fatima are the first mother and daughter to be honoured with the Ron Lenyk Volunteer of the Year Award. Two of the Centre’s most dedicated volunteers, they ensure that children with mental health challenges and their siblings receive high-quality childcare while their parents/caregivers attend counselling appointments at Peel Children’s Centre (PCC).

In recognizing the remarkable achievements of this mother/daughter team, the Centre’s Volunteer Coordinators, Linda Buchanan and Deanna Kloess, said:

“Hina (mom) has many titles: wife, mother of three, student and volunteer, to name a few.  Even with a busy home life raising three children, including a 13-year-old son with autism, Hina finds time in her day to attend Sheridan College as a student in Early Childhood Education. As if that isn’t enough, she is also a volunteer in our childcare program.

“Fatima (daughter) is equally committed to her family, her studies, her job and her volunteer position. A University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM) student majoring in psychology and biology, she hopes to pursue a career in occupational therapy. While at UTM, Fatima also works part-time in the library. When not at school, she provides a great deal of support to her brother with special needs. Even with these many demands on her time, Fatima is a volunteer who always seems to be available for us.

“Hina and Fatima are dedicated to sharing their knowledge and experience of special needs children in hopes of helping others in the community. As lifelong learners, they are also committed to reaching their full personal and professional potential.

“We are honoured to recognize these two very special women for the time, expertise and compassion they give to the kids and families at PCC. Congratulations Hina and Fatima!”

“Each year more than 120 specialized volunteers support children, youth and families receiving services at Peel Children’s Centre,” said Humphrey Mitchell, the Centre’s Executive Director. “Our volunteers are mentors, tutors, childcare providers, drivers, family resource coordinators, fundraisers, and Board Directors. Volunteers are truly the heart of our agency,” Mitchell said.

Peel Children’s Centre dedicated its volunteer award to Ron Lenyk in recognition of Ron’s leadership as a volunteer, philanthropist and advocate in Peel. In addition to his stellar career with Torstar Corporation, including 31 years as Publisher of The Mississauga News, Ron has been a generous supporter of numerous health, social service, sports and cultural charities.

The Volunteer Coordination Program at Peel Children’s Centre receives generous financial support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), an agency of the Government of Ontario. For over 25 years, OTF has supported the growth and vitality of communities across the province. Visit www.trilliumfoundation.org for more information.
