Reception to celebrate the Province’s NEW population-based funding for expanded Child and Youth Mental Health services in Peel Region

MISSISSAUGA - On Friday, December 16, Peel Paramedic Service employees arrived at Peel Children’s Centre with two ambulances and two vans filled to the brim with toys and diapers to be donated to the families we serve in Peel.

MISSISSAUGA – Nexus Youth Services (Nexus) clients and staff launched the development of an action plan for engaging youth within Nexus Youth Services and the community at large in a two-day workshop, “The Art of Youth Engagement,” held on December 5 and 6 at the Living Arts Centre.

Occasion to thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for a three-year grant that is funding the youth engagement project at Nexus Youth Services

WHEN:

This sold-out event at Rogues Restaurant on Sunday December 4 is PCC’s longest running fundraising activity and will include:

• Solo performance by rising star Michael Ciufo, operatic tenor and
  crossover vocalist from Mississauga
• Recognition of supporters
• Brunch
• Live and silent auction

PCC has received new funding from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services as part of the Ontario government’s commitment of $257 million province-wide over three years to expand mental health and addiction services for children and youth. Our service growth will include:

• walk-in counselling and expanded brief therapy options to provide fast access to service for children and youth who are experiencing mental health difficulties
• mental health workers in Peel schools to enable early identification and support of students with mental health difficulties
• expansion of our Intensive Child & Family Service and Sexual Abuse Treatment Program to provide faster access to treatment.

All services at Peel Children’s Centre are free of charge for the children, youth and families who use them. So who funds our services? The Government of Ontario provides 77% of our revenue and the Regional Municipality of Peel provides 4.4%. For the rest, we rely on our fundraising and business development efforts.

PCC’s Vision Statement – A Caring Community Working Together for Children and Youth – says it all. We could not offer our continuum of high-quality services without generous support from hundreds of individuals, corporations, foundations and community groups every year. We are pleased to profile the major donations, sponsorships and grants that PCC has received over the past several months.

Staff and volunteers at Peel Children’s Centre have had several occasions in recent months to celebrate our successes and highlight our commitment to clinical effectiveness, professional development and employee engagement. Read on for news about:

• the opening of Morgan House, our new treatment residence for children 7 to 11 years of age
• PCC’s internship program
• our annual Celebration Day where we recognized long-term staff service, presented the 2011 Ron Lenyk Volunteer of the Year Award, and raised funds for the United Way of Peel Region
• information session on evidence-based practice in school settings.

Mississauga – Over 200 children and youth at risk of family breakdown or displacement from school in Peel Region will benefit from counselling and support services in the home, school and community this year, thanks to a $25,000 donation to Peel Children’s Centre (PCC) from CIBC.

Brampton – Remy Fernandes, President and CEO of Hydro One Brampton, recently presented a donation of $7,500 to Peel Children’s Centre.

Mississauga – At its Annual Day of Celebration on October 12, Peel Children’s Centre (PCC) presented its Ron Lenyk Volunteer of the Year Award to Matthew Ribeiro.

Since July, Staples Business Depot at 3135 Argentia Rd in Mississauga has worked hard to make the beginning of the school year a positive experience for at-risk children and youth who are receiving mental health services at Peel Children’s Centre.

September 9, 2011 is International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day, when people around the world shine a spotlight on this devastating disorder that affects 1 in 100 babies.

Brampton – Morgan House, a new treatment residence in Brampton for children with mental health difficulties, welcomed its first residents this week.

Mississauga - Tonight at the Annual General Meeting of Peel Children’s Centre (PCC), RBC Foundation and DTZ Barnicke presented leadership gifts to support PCC’s continuum of mental health services for children, youth and their families in Peel Region.

MISSISSAUGA – Today the Nexus Youth Centre was brightened up with a painted wall of inspiring words by youth, thanks to the generosity of volunteers taking part in the United Way’s Day of CaringTM initiative.

Mississauga – Peel Children’s Centre (PCC) has presented its 2011 Mary Neville Award posthumously to the late Sylvia Leal, founder and Chief Executive Officer of PLASP Child Care Services.

Children’s Mental Health Week (May 1 to 8, 2011) is an annual campaign to raise public awareness of the signs of mental health difficulties, the importance of early treatment, and the services that are available to help children, youth and their families who are experiencing difficulties with feelings, behaviour or relationships.

Our Vision at Peel Children’s Centre is, “A Caring Community Working Together for Children.” PCC’s Annual Holiday Brunch and Auction afforded a wonderful opportunity to celebrate with our community partners. Read on to learn about a leadership gift from RBC, a presentation to long-time supporter Laurie Williamson, and brunch host Rogues Restaurant’s winning the 2010 Sam McCallion Small Business Community Involvement Award.

We also congratulate Lorna Reid, co-winner of PCC’s 2010 Mary Neville Award.

Peel Children’s Centre is grateful for the funding we receive from governments and our individual, corporate, foundation and community donors. With generous financial support, we are renovating a facility in Brampton for our Residential Treatment Program for children ages 7 to 11. PCC recently provided a tour of the site for our funders and donors.

PCC is fortunate to have competent, engaged staff and volunteers who enable us to fulfill our mission. At our annual Celebration Day, we recognized long-term staff service, including four 25-year staff members, and awarded PCC’s Ron Lenyk Volunteer of the Year Award to Angeline Edralin.

Today Peel Children’s Centre welcomed funders, donors, and elected officials to an event celebrating the renovation of a residence that will house the Centre’s Residential Treatment Program for children ages 7 to 11 who are experiencing mental health difficulties.

At its 25th Anniversary Celebration Day on October 13th, Peel Children’s Centre will present its Ron Lenyk Volunteer of the Year Award for 2010 to Angeline Edralin.

Angeline is the first fundraising volunteer to be recognized with the Centre’s Ron Lenyk Volunteer of the Year Award. Having started volunteering at Peel Children’s Centre (PCC) during her maternity leave eight years ago, she is also the Centre’s longest-serving fundraising volunteer.

As part of their annual day celebrating the achievements of staff and volunteers, Peel Children’s Centre and Nexus Youth Services will:

* Recognize staff for long-term service
* Celebrate 25 years with an anniversary cake-cutting
* Raise funds for the United Way of Peel Region with live and silent auctions
* Present the Ron Lenyk Volunteer of the Year Award.

Moncton, NB:  Peel Children’s Centre – a charitable, not-for-profit agency that provides residential treatment services for Maritime youth ages 12 to 19 years with serious emotional difficulties – is New Brunswick’s first provider of youth mental health residential treatment services to receive an Accreditation award.

Mississauga – Square One Youth Centre, a program of Nexus Youth Services, reopened its doors this week, welcoming youth and community partners to the centre’s fully renewed space located in Square One shopping centre.

Over the past month, two Staples Business Depot stores in Mississauga – 401/Winston Churchill and Heartland – worked hard to make the beginning of the school year a great experience for kids who are clients of Peel Children’s Centre.
