Mississauga – In honour of Family Day, Success By 6 Peel will be making a special delivery of teddy bears and a copy of the Peel Children’s Charter of Rights to the Peel Children’s Centre. The gifts will be distributed to preschool children with mental health difficulties and their families during home visits the week of
February 15th.

The Peel Children’s Charter of Rights was the basis for the recently published report, Status of Children in Peel 2009. Under the Right to Equal Access, the report states that 1 in 5 children experiences a mental health issue and the current waiting list for mental health services is approximately 9 months for children ages 0 to 6. Rapid population growth and high demand for social services has meant many children who cope with disabilities go untreated.

“On Family Day, we want to give children with special needs a little encouragement and give their families valuable information about children’s rights,” says Success By 6 Peel Director Elena DiBattista.  “The teddy bears were a donation from P&G salon professional, through the United Way of Peel Region, and are a wonderful symbol of hope.”

“These teddy bears embody the hope that mental health services bring to preschool children and their families who are experiencing serious difficulties,” says Peel Children’s Centre Executive Director Humphrey Mitchell. “They reinforce our commitment at Peel Children’s Centre to the Charter’s Right to Equal Access: Every child has the right to have special care and training because it doesn’t matter what skin colour or race or if they have any sickness or disability.”

Children’s Charter/teddy bear gift packages will also be given to Peel Children’s Aid for distribution to their clients including children in foster care.
