Respite Services:
Children’s Mental Health Respite Services of PeelCaregivers and families who care for children with mental health problems periodically need temporary respite care. Children’s Mental Health Respite Services of Peel provides child- and family-centred services that reduce
- the risk of family breakdown,
- the need for more intrusive placements outside the home, and
- the need for intervention to protect children.
We offer respite services as part of a child’s and family’s broader treatment plan.
Who is eligible for these services? We provide a spectrum of respite services for the families and caregivers of children who
- have mental health problems that put them at risk of losing their place in their home,
- are under 18 years old,
- are living in the Region of Peel, and
- have an existing case manager.
Admissions are available in a crisis situation even if the child and family do not have a case manager.
Families who need respite care often have multiple stressors, and limited coping and problem-solving abilities.
What do we do?Our respite service is individualized and focused on the child’s and the family’s needs. It provides a continuum of options, from community-based support services to out-of-home short-term placements, from planned to unplanned short-term interventions.
We offer 5 options for respite care, some of which are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year:
- residential respite in a Peel Children’s Centre facility for a maximum of 5 days
- purchased service
- volunteer host families
- support from a child and youth counsellor in the child’s home
- community-based programs such as the Boys and Girls Club or Parks and Recreation services.
Peel Children’s Centre is the lead agency in Children’s Mental Health Respite Services of Peel, which is delivered in partnership with
- Associated Youth Services of Peel,
